When we first become involved with curly horses, I was eager to get my hands on anything and everything I could that had to with them. Trouble was, and still is, since they are a rare and little-known breed, there isn't a whole lot out there! I would race into every book store I came across and head to the horse section to see what I could find. There are always breed books to be found, but very few ever listed my beloved curly horses! And, if they did, much of the information was incorrect. Things have gotten a bit better over the past few years, but I am still always eager to get my hands on any new tidbit of information or stories of their history. So, for all you curly horses lovers out there like me, I thought I would list the books I know of that contain at least a bit on curly horses! Each small piece of information is a clue to the curly horse's mysterious history! Enjoy! ;-) (And, if you know of any I have missed- PLEASE drop me a line and share them with me!!)

Zero Beats Per Minuteby Tena Bastian Cover photo of Three Feathers mare, Lazy C Kurlee katee, and her young colt- our stallion, TFN Nagi Hanhepi Wi To. Photography and artwork by Shawn Tucker (See more on "Media & Art" page)In the course of each of our lives, one of two things will likely
happen. We will take on the role of caregiver for someone who is
critically ill or we will require someone to care for us.
Michael
Bastian or “Bear” as he is known to his friends was living a good life.
He worked hard for everything he owned. He loved his wife and children
and had finally gotten to a point where he could enjoy the fruits of his
labor. At 47 years old, he was healthier than most men his age. Aside
from one surgery, he had never experienced any major medical problems
and according to doctors, had the heart of a twenty-two year old. He was
very involved in horses and was touring the country with his wife
presenting seminars based on the book she had just written.
One
hot summer day, for no apparent reason, all of that changed. His life
began to spiral out of control with a rare and sudden illness. It would
be a painful journey for the many lives that he touched but an
unrelenting one for one life in particular. His wife, Tena documented
the details of the events leading up to the illness and their struggle
to survive the seemingly endless complications that followed.

Spirit Beings and Sun Dancers by Janet Catherine Berlo Contains drawings by Black Hawk depicting curly horses!During the winter of 1880-81, Black Hawk, a Lakota artist living on the
Cheyenne River Sioux reservation, drew seventy-six vivid images
depicting complex scenes of ceremonial activity, personal visions,
historical events, and nature studies. Having recently emerged from
obscurity, Black Hawk's drawing book now stands as the most complete
visual record extant of Lakota art of the early reservation period
(1875-95). It is published here in full, for the first time, with fine
quality color plates of each drawing. Detailed commentary accompanies
the drawings, providing insight into Lakota religion, art, and culture
in the nineteenth century. Some of Black Hawk's illustrations are the
only known drawings of ceremonies described in ethnographic works such
as Black Elk Speaks, the famous account of visions experienced by
Lakota holy man Black Elk. The ceremonies depicted in Black Hawk's
drawings include the Sun Dance, buffalo transformation ceremonies, and
ceremonies honoring the sacred pipe. He also recorded scenes of Lakota
encounters with the Crow, of buffalo hunting, and of wildlife. An
invaluable contribution to our knowledge of Native American history and
art, Black Hawk's drawing book is a window unto a complex and eloquent
world. 76 color illustrations, 20 b/w illustrations.

ConquerorsBy Deb Bennett Ph. D. This is a truly fascinating book. Bennett, a paleontologist and horse
trainer, traces the origins of the domestic horse and horsemanship.
Starting with two chapters on the subspecies of Ice Age Equus caballus,
the author traces how multiple domestications of these subspecies led
to the ancestral breeds of domestic horses. The first section covers the
rise of horse keeping, with its attendant equipment and riding styles,
in Europe and Asia, while the second takes the horse to the New World.
The fact that the first horses were brought to North America from one
place, Spain, has affected both the later genetic history of horses in
the New World as well as the styles of riding and training. The author's
dual background brings major strengths to the book, evidenced by her
careful research into the paleontology and archaeology of the horse as
seen through the eyes of a well-known trainer. This scholarly, readable,
and well-illustrated work belongs in all libraries.

A Beautiful Cruel CountryBy Eva Antonia Wilbur-CruceArizona's Arivaca Valley lies only a short distance from the
Mexican border and is a rugged land in which to put down stakes. When
Arizona Territory was America's last frontier, this area was homesteaded
by Anglo and Mexican settlers alike, who often displaced the Indian
population that had lived there for centuries. This frontier way of
life, which prevailed as recently as the beginning of the twentieth
century, is now recollected in vivid detail by an octogenarian who spent
her girlhood in this beautiful, cruel country. Eva Antonia Wilbur
inherited a unique affinity for the land. Granddaughter of a
Harvard-educated physician who came to the Territory in the 1860s, she
was the firstborn child of a Mexican mother and Anglo father who
instilled in her an appreciation for both cultures. Little Toña learned
firsthand the responsibilities of ranching—an education usually
reserved for boys—and also experienced the racial hostility that
occurred during those final years before the Papago Indians were
confined to a reservation. Begun as a reminiscence to tell younger
family members about their "rawhide tough and lonely" life at the turn
of the century, Mrs. Wilbur-Cruce's book is rich with imagery and
dialogue that brings the Arivaca area to life. Her story is built
around the annual cycle of ranch life—its spring and fall round-ups,
planting and harvesting—and features a cavalcade of border characters,
anecdotes about folk medicine, and recollections of events that were
most meaningful in a young girl's life. Her account constitutes a
valuable primary source from a region about which nothing similar has
been previously published, while the richness of her story creates a
work of literature that will appeal to readers of all ages.
